Khiva is a real city-reserve. Khiva flourished in the 16th-18th centuries, when Khiva became the capital of the powerful Khiva Khanate. The final appearance of the city was formed in the late 18th - early 19th centuries. The old part of Ichan-Kala is an open-air museum, protected by UNESCO. On a fairly small territory of Ichan-Kala there are two palaces, more than 60 madrassas and mosques, mausoleums, a cathedral mosque, a market, caravanserais and baths, residential buildings. Ichan-Kala is surrounded by a powerful high fortress wall. Administrative and religious buildings are faced with colored tiles with incredibly beautiful patterns. Khiva was distinguished by its masters of wood carving. Columns, gates, windows are decorated with complex carved ornaments. Khiva became famous for its woolen carpets and jewelry.
